    History & Overview

The ancestor of the modern Bull Terrier was a deliberate cross between a Bulldog and a large, smooth Black and Tan Terrier. There are two varieties within the breed: the White Bull Terrier and the Colored Bull Terrier.  The early Bulldog-terrier cross proved to be extremely aggressive dogs with the power of the Bulldog and the speed, tenacity and intelligence of the Terrier.

Today, the Bull Terriers are sweet, energetic, playful dogs that require a lot of attention and love. If they are ignored, behavioral problems may develop. Early obedience classes and socialization with children, adults and other animals are recommended.

    Character

The Bull Terrier is an excellent guard and companion dog. Powerful and very energetic, he is a devoted and intelligent family companion. He will not fight unless provoked, but when he does, he can kill dogs much larger than himself. He is unsuitable for first-time dog owners and must be carefully trained. Female Bull Terriers are more gentle and easier to house-train.

    Potential Health Risks

The breed is affected by Hereditary Lethal Acrodermatitis (LAD). This rare genetic disease is characterized by growth retardation, acrodermatitis, purulent skin disease and inflammation of the folds of tissue around the nails. Affected puppies may also exhibit abnormal behavior and diarrhea, though not all of these signs are present in all afflicted puppies.

    Maintainance

There is no grooming required on a Bull Terrier, but if you show the dog in conformation, it is desirable to clip the whiskers on the face and above the eyes.
