    History

    The French Spaniel, or Epagneul Français, is a medium-sized, elegant and muscled dog. An ancient breed, it is believed to be the ancestor of many spaniel breeds.

    Roles

    Gentle, calm and docile, this honest and enthusiastic hunter is an outstanding pointing and retrieving dog. He is especially good for hunting woodcock, snipe and the ruffed grouse (partridge). He works calmly and methodically and is suitable for any terrain. His intelligence, legendary good humor and his eyes brimming with affection have endeared him to countless fans all over the world.

    Character

    The French Spaniel is a dog of exceptional beauty and a perfect temperament. He is very sociable and will live peacefully with other dogs and animals. He adores children and is very patient even with those who like to play rough. He becomes very attached to his family and is very loyal. Never aggressive, he makes a very good watchdog. Very clean, calm, docile, yet always ready to jump into action, he is an ideal companion.

    Appearance

    According to the breed standard, the coat should be long and wavy on the ears, back of the legs and tail; flat and silky and slightly wavy behind the neck and above the base of the tail; short and fine on the head. The accepted colors are white and brown with irregular patches, slightly or moderately flecked and roan. The brown varies from cinnamon to dark liver.
