Cytoplasm

Fluid-filled interior within the cell membrane. Even in such simple organisms as bacteria, the cytoplasm is a complex substance containing the nuclear body, which is rich in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribosomes with ribonucleic acid (RNA), and a fluid portion which contains various dissolved nutrients. The nuclear body is involved in reproduction, while ribosomes are involved in protein synthesis.2

In more complex organisms, the cytoplasm is packed full of organelles and is highly structured by a network of fine tubes and fibers that are spread throughout the cell. These supporting tubes (microtubules) and fibers (microfilaments) are known collectively as cytoskeleton.1
