The Nebelung is a very gentle, quiet, timid, calm, undemanding “lap cat.” The breed was developed in the United States in the 1980s and was recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) in two colors only – blue and white. Its conformation is the same as that of the Russian Blue from which it was bred. In lengthening the hair of the Russian Blue, breeders created a double coat of thick fur which is very soft to the touch.

The fur is very pale blue-gray with a silvery sheen as if spangled. The blue color is just a regular color, without tabby markings, shiny and glossy. The lighter the color, the better. Pads and muzzle are pinkish gray. In the white color variety, the color is pure white and glossy; the muzzle, lips and pads are pink.

The eye color is very bright green at maturity. Nebelung kitten eyes change rapidly from yellow to green. By four months, a green ring usually appears around the pupil.
