LaPerm Cat Breed

Laperm Cat Breed
When you first glimpse this unusual cat, you might thing are were seeing a cat just back from a hairdresser. But only Mother Nature has styled this breed's curly locks. LaPerm is a relatively new Rex and currently is quite rare, although it steadily gaining fanciers because its appealing personality comes with the curly hairdo. LaPerm eans wavy in several languages. The story of LaPerm origins is the same as the rest of the Rex breeds -it arose spontaneously from the domestic gene pool.

The characteristic coat comes in both shorthaired and longhaired varieties. In the shorhaired LaPerm, the coat is short and wavy over the shoulders, back, and undersides. In the longhaired variety, the hair is medium long and the curls range from tight ringlets to long corkscrew curls resembling the hair style called the "shag." Combine that with a long semiforeign body, ears with lynx tippings, a broad wedge-shaped head and expressive, almond-shaped eyes, and you have the unique look of the LaPerm.

LaPerm kittens can be born bald with curly hair or with straight hair. The coat changes so much as the kittens grow that telling what any kitten will look like as an adult is virtually impossible. Some of the straight-hair kittens grow up to become regular straight-hair cats, but some sprout curls as they mature.

Like all cats, LaPerm shed. According to fanciers, though, they do not shed as much as cats with normal hair. However, some LaPerms will go through several molting periods in their lives, where they lose much of their hair. LaPerms molt during periods of hormonal activity such as puberty and pregnancy. Altering will generally stop molting since it eliminates the hormonal changes that trigger the molt.

LaPerms are gentle, affectionate, and blossom with human companionship. They want to be involved in whatever you are doing. LaPerm comes in all colors and patterns, including the Siamese pointed pattern. The hair length and fullness vary depending on the season and maturity of the cat. When choosing a kitten, look for curly whiskers, because this means the coat will also be curly.
